About Phonics Fun Books

Author, Dorothy Ledum, has been an educator for 30 years.   Her Phonics Fun Books have ushered hundreds of children into the world of reading.

Even ADD, ADHD, and dyslexic children are captivated by her phonics books and begin to read with success.  This is her story:

In her own words:

As I was teaching, my heart went out to children who struggled with reading.  ADD, ADHD, and dyslexic children had the biggest problems.  The school reading program was overwhelming for them.  It did not give enough practice when new vowel sounds were introduced.  ADD, ADHD, and dyslexic children were discouraged and I was frustrated.

I asked my principal for easier materials that taught only one vowel at a time. He told me that I should write it. I answered, "That would be too difficult and take too much time." He told me to see what I could find. I hunted, but found nothing suitable for my ADD, ADHD, and dyslexic children, so I began to write... and "lo and behold", I discovered God gave me the gift of writing.

All of my children enjoyed the phonics books I wrote, BUT, at first, MY books were too difficult for my ADD, ADHD, and dyslexic children. I rewrote and rewrote until ALL of the children could read the stories with ease and enjoyment.  My creative juices continued to flow and I wrote story after story with lots of easy "kid-friendly words" and "kid-grabbing stories.

All of the children read my phonics books with enthusiasm.  But, by far my greatest joy was that the ADD, ADHD, and dyslexic children became absorbed in my phonics books, read them easily, and gained confidence in their reading ability.  The smiles on their faces and the joy in their eyes warmed my heart.

After reading my phonics books, the ADD, ADHD, and dyslexic children were able to read and enjoy other books in the regular reading program.   Their parents, my principal, and I were delighted.

 Dyslexia and ADD/ADHD

Dyslexia and ADD/ADHD are two separate entities.  Many children with ADD or ADHD are not dyslexic.  But often ADD, ADHD, and dyslexia go hand in hand.  (ADD mans attention deficit disorder.  ADHD means attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.)

Dyslexia is a condition that makes it extremely difficult to read, write, and spell.  Dyslexic children often reverse letters (b-d) or flip them (b-p).  They may read words backwards (was-saw) or substitute words for the written word (home-house.)

Many children have these problems now and then.  But dyslexic children show these symptoms much more frequently or severely than other children of the same age.

Most dyslexic children have average intelligence and many are very bright.  Never-the-less, reading, writing, and spelling are very difficult for dyslexic children.

Dyslexic children need easy words, lots of repetition, and attention grabbing activities.  Phonics Fun Books give many dyslexic children success in beginning to read.

ADD and ADHD are conditions that makes it difficult to sit still, pay attention, or control impulsive behavior. ADD and ADHD children often struggle to follow through on instructions, are easily distracted, and forgetful in daily activities.  Most children have these problems now and then.  But, children with ADD, and ADHD show these symptoms much more frequently or severely than other children of the same age.

Many children with ADD and ADHD are excellent readers and show no signs of dyslexia.  But frequently children with ADD and ADHD struggle to read and are dyslexic.

Certain foods might contribute to ADD and ADHD type behavior.  Too much saturated fat may affect the brain much as it does the heart and the arteries. Too much sugar can also give rise to hyperactive type behavior such as fidgeting and squiring and the inability to sit still for long periods of time.  Also, allergies can also give rise to ADD type symptoms.  (Common food allergies may include wheat, eggs, peanuts, and dairy products.)  If you can locate the cause of the ADD or ADHD type behavior, there is a large chance you can help your child show dramatic improvement.
Here are some tips that may help you teach a child who has symptoms of ADD, ADHD, or is dyslexic.
Phonics Fun Books help many ADD, ADHD, dyslexic, and some children with special needs to succeed in reading.  The children are captivated by the interesting stories and attention-getting activities.

Also, they discover that God enjoys fun and laughter, as they enter the world of reading adventure.
